QS Ranking: BUET has improved

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has advanced one step in the new ranking of the world's best universities. Among the top thousand universities, BUET is ranked between 761 and 770.

The best technical university in the country was in the range of 801-850 in last year's list. On the other hand, NSU, the third best university in the country, has dropped from last year's 901-950 range and is now in the 851-900 range.

Dhaka University is the best university of Bangladesh in the best 554th position in the last decade in the international ranking.

Quackquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK-based education and research firm, published the World's Top Universities 2025 list on its website on Tuesday night. The private university North South University (NSU) ranks between 851-900 in the list.

1 thousand 503 universities of the world have been included in this year's ranking of QS. Among them, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States is at the top of the list. The Imperial College of London in the United Kingdom is in the second position and the famous Oxford University of the country is the third.

Among the top 500 universities in the list, 13 institutions from India and two institutions from Pakistan have been placed. Apart from this, there are 15 universities in Bangladesh, 50 in India and 14 in Pakistan in the complete list. Compared to the last time, DU has improved a lot in the ranking this time. DU's position in last year's list was between 691 and 700. Earlier, DU's position was between 801 and 1000 range for five consecutive years from 2019 to 2023.

Apart from these three universities, 12 other universities of Bangladesh have been ranked among more than 1,500 universities worldwide. Out of these 4 are universities of technology.

They are BRAC University (1001-1200), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Daffodil International University, Jahangirnagar University, Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and Rajshahi University. (1201-1400).

Besides, East West University, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, Stamford University, Bangladesh and United International University are on the list from 1401.

From 2004 to 2009, UK-based education magazine Times Higher Education jointly published the best university rankings, but in 2010, QS separated. Since then, they have been publishing the rankings individually. The list of best universities published by QS is considered one of the most accepted rankings worldwide. The rankings now measure the overall quality of universities across eight indicators. Each index has a score of 100. The overall score is determined based on the average of the sum of all indicators.

QS ranking indicators are Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty-Student Ratio, Citations Per Faculty, International Faculty Ratio, International Student Ratio, International Research Network and Employment Outcomes.
